Giomici is an 11th century fortress situated on a hilltop in Umbria, the green heart of Italy. The little inner court, the old gateway leading to narrow alleys, the houses within the castle walls, the defence towers proudly silhouetted against the sky and the tiny parish church make up the residential centre to this day. Just outside the majestic walls there are typically picturesque Umbrian farmhouses.
During the middle ages, due
to its strategic position between two important medieval trade routes and the
river Chiascio, Giomici was often subject to sieges and battles between the
nearby powerful states of Assisi, Perugia and Gubbio.
In Renaissance times Giomici came into the possession of the Dukes of Montefeltro and remained under their control for about 250 years. However throughout the centuries Giomici changed its function: first it was a medieval fortress, then it turned into an agrarian centre and finally, after the abolition of the métayage in the sixties, it became a lodging place for those seeking peace and tranquillity....!
Glomisso, the German nobleman who was the first owner and name-giver to the fortress around the year 1000, surely would never have imagined this history. After nearly one thousand years we are proud to relate it and be part of it!
